Exterior Painting That Survives a Calgary Chinook

Most exterior paint fails at the prep, not the product. We wash, scrape, prime and coat to the substrate in front of us, using the short Calgary paint season properly instead of rushing it. Applied by the same in-house Red Seal crews that build the wall underneath.

Why Paint Fails Early Here

Calgary is one of the hardest climates in the country on exterior paint

A coating that lasts fifteen years in a milder climate can start failing in five here. It is not one thing, it is three working against the film at once: intense UV at altitude, chinook swings that expand and contract the substrate underneath, and hail that leaves micro-fractures a homeowner never notices from the ground. Add a paint season that is realistically only a few months long, and it is easy to see why so much Calgary exterior paint looks tired well before it should.

High-altitude UV

Calgary’s elevation and clear skies mean more direct UV hitting your walls than most of the country sees. Cheap paint chalks and fades fast under that kind of exposure.

Chinook expansion & contraction

A forty-degree swing in a single day makes wood and fibre-cement move. A rigid or poorly bonded film cracks at the joints where that movement concentrates.

Hail micro-damage

Hail does not always dent siding, but it can crater the paint film itself. Those tiny breaks let moisture in behind the coating long before you see obvious peeling.

Know The Signs

How do you know your home needs repainting?

Walk the perimeter once a season and look closely at south and west-facing walls first, they take the hardest UV and the most temperature swing. Catching failure early usually means a straightforward repaint. Waiting means bare wood, water intrusion and a bigger job.

  • Peeling, cracking or flaking paint on any elevation
  • Chalky residue that rubs off on your hand when you touch the wall
  • Fading or colour loss well ahead of the coating’s expected life
  • Caulking that has cracked, shrunk or pulled away from joints and trim
  • Bare wood exposed at corners, sills or fascia boards
  • Small dents or cratering in the paint film after a hail storm
  • Dark staining or mildew on north-facing or shaded walls
  • A dull, flat sheen where the surface used to look wet or glossy when new

Why Homeowners Trust Us With Paint

Prep is ninety percent of the job

Almost every early paint failure we get called to fix traces back to prep that got skipped to save a day: paint applied over chalking residue, bare wood left unprimed, caulking that was never renewed. Because our in-house Red Seal crews handle the siding, trim and roofline behind the paint as well, we know exactly what condition each surface is in before a brush touches it. What We Paint

Exterior painting & coating options

From a full-elevation repaint to a single feature, every surface gets prep matched to its substrate before a coat goes on.

Board-and-batten wood siding with a stucco accent on a Calgary exterior renovation

Siding & Stucco Painting

Full-elevation painting for Hardie board, wood and stucco siding, where the prep behind the colour matters more than the colour itself. We wash, scrape, sand and prime to the substrate in front of us, not a generic spec.

  • Fibre-cement, wood & stucco surfaces
  • Substrate-matched primer
  • Full elevation or feature-wall coverage

Trim, Fascia & Window Detailing

The narrow surfaces that show every flaw up close. Window trim, fascia boards and bay details get their own prep and cut-in, since they take more sun and moisture than the field of the wall.

  • Window & door trim
  • Fascia & roofline detailing
  • Clean, sharp cut lines

Fences, Decks & Wood Features

Fences, deck railings, pergolas and privacy screens finished with the coating that actually fits ground-level wood: enough film to protect it, not so much that it flakes off the first winter.

  • Fences & privacy screens
  • Deck railings & pergolas
  • Solid stain or paint finish

Garage Doors & Entry Features

Garage doors, entry columns and wood accents painted or coated to match the rest of the envelope, so the front of the house reads as one finished job rather than a patched-up entry.

  • Columns & wood accents
  • Colour-matched to siding & trim
Timing Matters As Much As Product

What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Calgary?

Paint needs the surface and the air within a workable temperature range to cure properly, and Calgary only offers that window for part of the year. Most acrylic products want the surface temperature between roughly 10°C and 30°C during application and for several hours after, with the air staying above freezing overnight while the film sets. In practice that limits reliable exterior painting here to late spring through early fall, and even inside that window, the wrong day can undo good prep.

A short real season

Between spring frost risk and the first fall cold snap, Calgary’s dependable painting window is narrower than it looks on a calendar, which is why scheduling early in the season matters.

Direct sun causes lap marks

Painting a wall in full afternoon sun dries the edge before the next section overlaps it. We work the shaded elevation first and chase the shade around the house.

Dew point & morning moisture

Painting over overnight dew traps moisture under the film. We check surface conditions before starting, not just the forecast high for the day.

Cure times and workable temperature ranges vary by product, so treat this as the general Calgary picture we plan around, not a spec for every paint on the market.

Choosing Your Coating

Acrylic paint or elastomeric coating, which is right for your walls?

The right coating depends on the substrate, not personal preference. Siding and trim generally want a flexible acrylic, cracked or aging stucco often wants an elastomeric that can bridge hairline movement, and ground-level wood usually does better with a lighter stain than either.

Modern Calgary home exterior with stone and wood cladding Most versatile

Acrylic Latex Paint

Typical lifespan7–10 yrs
Relative material costMid-range

The default choice for wood and fibre-cement siding, trim and most previously painted surfaces. It flexes with temperature swings better than oil-based products, breathes so trapped moisture can escape, and holds colour well through Calgary UV when applied at proper film thickness.

Elastomeric Coating

Typical lifespan10–15 yrs
Relative material costHigher

A thick, rubberised coating built for stucco and masonry, applied heavier than paint so it can bridge hairline cracks and stay flexible through freeze-thaw. It is the right call on stucco walls that already show fine cracking, but it needs a sound substrate and correct film build to work as advertised.

Backyard pergola and deck railing with a stain finish in Calgary Ground-level wood

Solid Colour Stain

Typical lifespan3–5 yrs
Relative material costLower

A lighter-film option for fences, deck railings and pergolas, surfaces that get direct weather and foot-level abuse. It penetrates rather than building a thick skin, so it will not peel in sheets the way paint can on the same wood, but it needs refreshing more often.

Lifespans assume proper prep and correct film thickness, which is the part a cheap quote usually cuts first. We will recommend the coating that fits your substrate, not the one that is easiest to apply. Relative material cost compares these materials to each other, not a quote for your project. Your price depends on size, access and what we find underneath.

How It Works

Your painting project, step by step

A repaint holds up when the prep is right. Here is exactly what to expect.

01

Exterior Assessment

We walk every elevation, identify the substrates involved and check for rot, movement or moisture behind the existing finish before quoting anything.

02

Wash & Strip

Pressure washing removes chalking, mildew and loose material, then hand-scraping and sanding take failing paint back to a sound edge.

03

Repair & Caulk

Soft wood gets replaced, not painted over. Joints, seams and trim gaps are caulked so water cannot get behind the new coating.

04

Prime & Coat

A primer matched to the substrate, then coats applied to proper film thickness rather than stretched thin to cover more wall per gallon.

05

Final Walkthrough

We walk every elevation with you in daylight, touch up anything that needs it, and back the work with a workmanship warranty.

Painting Questions

Exterior painting in Calgary, answered

Most exteriors here need repainting every 5 to 10 years depending on the substrate, exposure and how well the last job was prepped. South and west-facing walls that take the most sun and chinook swing usually go first. Acrylic paint on siding and trim tends to sit at the shorter end of that range, while a well-applied elastomeric coating on stucco can run longer.

Late spring through early fall, when surface and air temperatures stay reliably within the range most acrylic products need to cure, roughly 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, without a hard overnight frost. Calgary weather can turn quickly even inside that window, so we check actual site conditions, not just the calendar, before starting a coat.

Yes. Bare wood needs a stain-blocking, penetrating primer to seal tannins and grain. Fibre-cement siding usually comes factory-primed and mainly needs any cut edges or repairs re-sealed. Stucco and masonry need a primer built to bond with a porous, alkaline surface, and metal needs a rust-inhibiting primer if it is not pre-finished. Using one primer for all of it is one of the fastest ways to get an early failure.

If the stucco is sound with only fine hairline cracking, a good acrylic can work. If the stucco already shows more significant cracking or has failed before, an elastomeric coating is usually the better call because it applies thicker and stays flexible enough to bridge that movement. We assess the actual wall before recommending either one.

It depends heavily on substrate and prep more than on the paint can label. Acrylic on properly prepped siding and trim typically runs 7 to 10 years, elastomeric coatings on stucco can reach 10 to 15 years, and stain on ground-level wood like fences and deck railings usually needs refreshing every 3 to 5 years because it takes more direct abuse.

Always. Pressure washing removes chalking residue, dirt, mildew and loose paint that would otherwise stop the new coat from bonding. We let the surface dry fully before any scraping, sanding, priming or painting starts, since trapping moisture under a fresh coat is a common cause of early peeling.

Yes, and it is often invisible from the ground. Hail can crater or fracture the paint film without denting the substrate underneath, and those tiny breaks let moisture get behind the coating well before obvious peeling shows up. If your home took a hail hit, it is worth having the paint checked at the same time as the roof and siding.

Yes. Commercial and multi-unit exteriors are the same craft with different logistics: work has to be staged around tenants, parking and business hours, access above the first storey needs lifts or swing stage rather than ladders, and the surface areas are large enough that colour consistency between batches has to be managed deliberately. The prep discipline does not change. What changes is the schedule and the site plan, and both get worked out before anyone opens a pail.
