The Damage You Can’t See

Hail rarely leaves an obvious hole

The most expensive hail damage is the damage you cannot see from the ground. Hail bruises the mat beneath the shingle and knocks off the granule layer that protects it from the sun. The roof looks fine, but its life has been cut short, and by the time a leak shows on a ceiling the claim window may have closed. The same hail often dents siding, soffit, fascia and eavestrough at the same time, damage that is just as easy to miss from the ground. That is why a documented inspection after a major storm matters, even when nothing looks wrong.

A shortened roof life

Granule loss exposes the shingle to UV. A roof with years left can start failing early, long after the storm everyone forgot about.

A denied or missed claim

Most Alberta policies have a time limit to report storm damage. A vague estimate gets questioned; a dated, photo-documented report gives an adjuster something concrete to assess.

Interior water damage

A cracked shingle or damaged flashing lets the next rain into the deck, insulation and drywall, turning a small storm claim into a far larger interior one.

Know The Signs

How do you know if your home has hail damage?

You do not need to get on the roof. After a hailstorm, most of the tell-tale signs are visible from the ground or from the damage to everything around your house. If your car, deck or eavestrough took dents, your roof and siding almost certainly did too. If you notice any of these, book an inspection before the claim window closes.

  • Circular bruises or dark spots where hail knocked the granules off shingles
  • Bald patches and granule loss collecting in gutters after a storm
  • Cracked, split or shattered shingles, most visible on the storm-facing slope
  • Dented metal, vents, flashing, eavestrough and downspouts (an easy tell from the ground)
  • Dings or chips on the roof edge, ridge cap and any exposed fascia
  • Dents or splits in vinyl or metal siding and cladding, most visible on the storm-facing wall
  • Cracked or dented soffit panels, and torn or dented window screens and trim
  • Soft, spongy spots underfoot where the mat beneath the shingle has been bruised
  • Water stains appearing on ceilings or in the attic days or weeks after the storm
  • A neighbour on your street already having their roof inspected or replaced

Your Claim, Explained

Does insurance cover hail damage in Alberta?

In most cases, yes. Standard Alberta home insurance policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, and Calgary sits in one of the most hail-prone regions in Canada. What decides whether your claim is approved is not the damage itself, it is how well that damage is documented against your policy language, and whether you report it in time.

Here is the honest part most contractors leave out: we cannot and will not tell you your roof is a write-off to sell you one. We document what is actually there. If it is a repair, we say so. If it needs full replacement, the paperwork will show exactly why.

Storm Damage Questions

Hail & storm restoration in Calgary, answered

The clearest signs are visible from the ground: dents on metal vents, flashing, eavestrough and downspouts, granules collecting in gutters, and cracked or bruised shingles on the storm-facing slope. If your car or deck took dents, your roof almost certainly did too. A lot of hail damage is not visible from the ground, though, which is why a documented roof inspection after a major storm is worth booking even when nothing looks wrong.

In most cases, yes. Standard Alberta home insurance policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, though deductibles and terms vary by policy. Approval usually comes down to two things: reporting the damage within your policy time limit, and documenting it thoroughly. We photograph and scope the damage in detail, and hand you that documentation for your claim. Confirm the specifics with your insurer, since we cannot speak to what your individual policy covers.

Most Alberta policies require you to report storm damage within a set window, often a matter of months, and some tie the claim to the date of the storm rather than the date you noticed a problem. Because hail damage can stay hidden for a long time, the safe move is to get the roof inspected and documented soon after a major storm, so your options stay open. Check your specific policy for its reporting deadline.

You have the right to choose your own contractor. An insurer or adjuster may suggest names, but the decision is yours. We work for you, not the insurance company: we document the real damage, restore the roof properly, and stand behind it with a workmanship warranty, which is not always the priority of a storm-chasing crew passing through after a big hail event.

It can. When we restore a roof we can specify impact-rated (Class 4) shingles, which are built to take hail better than standard shingles and, with some insurers, may even reduce your premium. We will walk you through the options and what your policy allows before any work starts.

On an approved claim, your cost is typically your policy deductible, with the balance covered by insurance. We cannot and will not waive or absorb a deductible, that is insurance fraud in Alberta, but we will give you a clear, honest scope so you know exactly what the claim covers before work begins.

Yes. Our roofers are Red Seal certified, the national trade standard, and every job carries COR safety certification and $10M liability coverage. We keep the work in-house rather than subcontracting, so one accountable team handles your restoration from the first inspection to the final walkthrough.
